HSE Headed Notepaper

Psychiatrist defends use of HSE logo

A psychiatrist has defended sending letters to politicians on HSE-branded paper warning them against repealing the Eighth Amendment.

The health service said that Ciaran Clarke, a psychiatrist for children and adolescents in Dublin North, did not have the executive’s permission to send the letters. He claimed that allowing abortion when a woman is in “maternal distress” would end in abortions being legalised “on demand, up to birth”.

Dr Clarke contacted TDs yesterday and claimed that he was obliged as a psychiatrist to advocate for those who are “at risk”. He said that allowing legal access to abortion for rape victims would be trying to “solve one reprehensible crime by adding another one”.
